Leviton ODS10 Wall Switch Review
I installed one of these in my laundry room (which is located just inside the garage door in my house). Now, whenever we come home, we don’t have the fumble for the light switch. I’ve also installed one in the room that my wife uses for her office for the same reasons.
This switch comes with three adjustments to customize it to your needs.
First, it has an ambient light adjustment so that you can tell it not to turn on if there is already sufficient light in the room. If you turn this setting all the way up, the switch will become a manual on, auto off switch that will only turn on when you push the button, but will turn off after it senses no motion for a set period of time.
Second, it has a sensitivity adjustment, which adjusts how far the sensor will look for motion.
Third, it has a duration adjustment to tell it how long it should wait with no motion before turning the light off.
Leviton ODS10 Wall Switch Review – It also has a red LED, which blinks whenever it detects motion, so you can tell how whether your movements are being detected or not. This switch works with both magnetic and electronically ballasted fluorescent fixtures. Installation is pretty straight forward but may require the use of an a/c probe to determine hot and ground or neutral wires. Set up is simple with the adjustment dials being easy to understand and dial-in.
Your lights will activate in response to any motion and the manual on/off is a great feature to have as you can simply turn the lights off or on and not worry. The motion sensor resets after the selected time out period with no motion. The unit is quite sensitive, picking up the initial motion of the garage door opening so the lights are on by the time the garage door is fully open. This would be a great idea for closets and other areas where lights are frequently left on.
Some of the cheaper motion switches are designed to be used with incandescent bulbs but this one manages fluorescents very well. It is easy to install but you should note that there is a warning not to attempt to install the switch with live wires because unlike regular switches, this one is electronic and can be damaged easily.
It has been noted that it is expensive, and there is no way to keep the lights on manually. You can turn them on using the switch but it will time-out if no motion is detected. Although this light switch may cost a bit more than other similar switches it works flawlessly every time. You can override the switch to turn it on or off and then it resets after the 10 minutes and back to the motion detection. This switch requires a ground connection. There is a slight delay when the light clicks on for about 1 second. It does ‘click’ on and you will notice a faint sound.
Leviton ODS10 Wall Switch Review – This switch is a bit pricey for some situations but is very flexible and configurable if you need that for unique situations. Works with all types of bulbs including electronic ballast fluorescent lights.
